The 8-day Calendar.
How I’d like my calendar to look and function. Why doesn’t this exist?
First off, I believe Apple’s Calendar app is one of the native IOS app that has the most room for improvement (Read: the calendar app is pretty terrible).
But before getting into that, I wanted to talk about one my biggest issues with ALL calendar interfaces and layouts, whether desktop or mobile. Most calendar apps give you the option to start your “week view” from either sunday or monday, as seen here:
In either case, the week is only 7 days long. Apple gives the option of 5 or 7. Google give the option of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 14. My idea is simple, and may not seem revolutionary, but this what I want:
In “week” view, I want an 8-day view from Sunday to Sunday!
For example, it’d look something like this:
And here’s why. Consider these two, recurring scenarios.
- Say it’s Thursday, you check your calendar to see what you have going on this coming weekend. I’d like to see what I’m doing both Saturday and Sunday.
- Now say it’s Sunday. Which would you rather see: (a) what just happened all week, or (b) what is on your plate for the coming week? Most people would choose (b).
People who experience scenario (1) would prefer their week-view to start on monday.
People who experience scenario (2) would prefer their week-view to start on sunday.
The issue is, these scenarios are not mutually exclusive! We all experience both scenarios, not-so-surprisingly on a weekly basis. So, the solution, mocked up below again with google calendar, is to see an 8-day calendar view!
What do you think? Would you use an 8-day calendar view? Thanks for reading!
More to come,
